I was wandering around my blogging world and come upon a post by The Bumble Files about how our holidays are being somehow transformed into more than a day .
The first federal holiday law was enacted in 1870 and was set forth to declare holidays for federal workers. The first federal holidays included Christmas, Thanksgiving, New Year’s Day, and the Fourth of July.
To date the laws declaring federal holidays are still only legally applicable to federal workers and those residing in the District of Columbia. Each state carries the independent authority to declare its own legal holidays and set forth any restrictions regarding the holiday.
Now if you ask most people they will tell you it’s a ( federal holiday ) to most of our seven main holidays . I was , for the most part employed by companies that declared most of it’s workers ( subcontractors ) so the holiday schedule didn’t apply to us .
For me the first en-longed holiday was Thanksgiving , being a one day holiday when I first joined the workforce . Quickly our economy had taken it over with the next day being Black Friday , the biggest shopping day in the season . I remember when shopping days didn’t clash with the work week . I also remember the work week for me as being 45 hours a week , I was scheduled to work Saturdays for 5 hours every week , If not more .
Continuing economic problems have stymied our factories and retail stores , as a result big business come up with these business holiday’s , hence Black Friday was born . Almost every place of business but retail and banks are now closed on the Friday after thanksgiving so we all can (enjoy) a day of shopping at reduced pricing..? Really if they can sell these items at these prices that day , why can’t they sell them for that price everyday ? The answer is they can but the American people are being set up through government and big business . Now we are seeing December 26 as another big sale , to sell off excess that didn’t sell prior . Most have this day off , and yes it’s even without pay.
